You can’t knock Capital One for their marketing persistence. It seems that virtually every month I get some form of letter through the mail offering a unique deal I simply can’t miss.

I wouldn’t be able to confirm that they offer anything unique, but they are competitive.

Londoners will be glad to hear that by September 2007 you should be able to use a mash up of the very successful Oyster Card and Barclays credit card. Many Londoners I speak to complain about their wallets overflowing with various types of plastic so any efforts to help that problem will probably be most welcome.

The Barclaycard OnePulse as it’s known, will offer payment of purchases under £10 by swiping the card on readers in shops, car parks and vending machines.

According to This Is Money:

“It is the result of a deal between Barclaycard, Visa and Transport for London. It will be the first time the Oyster card system has been added to a bank card, and the first time a contactless payment system, where users do not need to enter a Pin or sign for purchases under £10, has been used in Britain.”

‘We believe Barclaycard OnePulse is the future of payments in London and hope as many Londoners as possible enjoy the benefits when it is rolled out in the autumn,’ said Elizabeth Chambers of Barclaycard. The company is signing up hundreds of retailers, including newsagents, coffee shops and cafés, who will install card readers at their tills.

It appears that the ever more competitive credit card market is beginning to tighten it’s belt in the UK.

According to recent research from cardguide.co.uk the number of cards now offering fee free balance transfers with 0% interest free periods is in significant decline.

The mechanism of zero fees on balance transfers has long been used to massage the cost of repaying balances without incurring large amounts of interest.

The problem appears to be that credit card companies are not making enough money and this is therefore resulting in a rethink on fees.

Of the many zero per cent balance transfer credit cards still available on the market, most charge borrowers a fee for transferring other credit card balances onto the card.

Steve Brown, BalanceTransfer.cc and BusinessCreditCards.cc owner, said: “Zero per cent intro APR balance transfer credit cards that don’t charge a fee for transferring balances have been the most popular products recommended at the BalanceTransfer.cc site for many months now.”
